Q: Are all hardwood floors “real wood”?
A: Yes! But there are two main types of hardwood floors. One is called “Solid,” which means the individual planks or strips are milled from a single piece of lumber - through and through, it all came from the same tree. The other type is called “Engineered,” where multiple-ply construction brings several layers of wood together for a plank that has superior resistance to shrinkage and warping than solid wood.
Q: What species of tree does hardwood flooring come from?
A: Literally dozens of different species of wood can be used for hardwood flooring, each with its own distinct look and practical advantages. The most common species are oak, maple, ash…but even exotic species with dramatic appearances are available. Some species are more durable than others – pine floors are lovely, but can be easily dented and scratched, whereas mahogany floors are among the "hardest" of all hardwood species.
Q: Don't hardwood floors need to be refinished often?
A: Well, that depends on how much wear and tear they get. With normal care, your hardwood floors shouldn't need refinishing for decades!
Q: What rooms are most suitable for hardwood flooring?
A: Because it is a natural product, hardwood floors can absorb moisture. For that reason, hardwood is not the most suitable option for full bathrooms (although it can be used for half baths without problem). Generally, hardwood should not be installed in basements or other rooms that are below grade and may have moisture issues.
Q: Can I install my own hardwood floor?
A: Installing hardwood floors is not a simple process, and is not recommended for the casual do-it-yourselfer. But with the right tools and some woodworking experience, it can be done.
Q: Isn't hardwood awfully expensive?
A: While there is some investment needed upfront, keep in mind that hardwood floors generally improve in appearance over time, and increase the value of your home.
